Número de Identidad de Extranjero
Your unique foreigner identification number for dealings with Spain. It is a number, not a photo card, and by itself does not prove identity or permission to reside.
Practical, bilingual support for people who want to understand the process, feel prepared and not face it alone.
You will often hear any foreigner document called an “NIE” or “NIE card.” That is common shorthand, but it is not technically precise. Understanding the difference makes it much easier to book the right appointment and prepare the right papers.
Your unique foreigner identification number for dealings with Spain. It is a number, not a photo card, and by itself does not prove identity or permission to reside.
The physical residence card for people whose route requires one, normally obtained after the underlying permission has been granted and a police fingerprint appointment has taken place. It carries the NIE.
The town hall record of where you normally live. It proves the address recorded locally, but it does not grant immigration status or replace the NIE or TIE.
Why might you need both an NIE and a padrón? The NIE identifies you in Spanish administrative and economic dealings; the padrón records your local address. A later procedure may request one, the other or both. EU citizens normally follow a separate registration route and generally receive the green EU registration certificate containing their NIE rather than a TIE.
The process may be complicated. Getting help shouldn’t be.
